Costume contest ideas from real organisers: categories, tiers and themes

Short answer

Comic-Con International's masquerade publishes costume contest ideas as re-creations from movies, television, anime, comic books, Broadway shows and video games, beside completely original designs. Downtown Knoxville adds themed group and Hollywood or Broadway categories, Cheekwood sets an American-icon theme for dogs, and Kawaii Kon sorts cosplay entrants into four tiers. Judges at Potato Creek State Park determine seven awards.

Halloween costume contest categories: what the lists and organisers publish

Scariest, funniest and most creative appear in the lists from Potato Creek State Park, the City of Mobile, The Bash, Get Your Holiday On, SurveyLegend and Austin's adult event. The wording shifts: the City of Mobile writes Best Scariest and Most Hilarious where Potato Creek writes scariest and funniest, and SurveyLegend adds cutest, most realistic and coolest handmade costume.

The Bash goes beyond the common three with cutest, couple costume, family costume, group costume, Halloween makeup, lookalike and Halloween mask. Get Your Holiday On adds most original, best handmade and best celebrity impersonation beside best couple/group. Costume Works sorts by who wears the outfit: homemade, family, babies, children, couples, groups and pets.

The guides' lists are suggestions for hosts, and only an organiser's own published line is a rule for entrants.

Costume contest categories for adults: Austin, Tucson Comic-Con and Gen Con

Austin's Adult Halloween Costume Contest offers five categories: Funniest, Scariest, Sexiest, Most Creative and Best Group. Tucson Comic-Con's adult contest pairs a skill ladder with a team line: Novice, Intermediate, Advanced and Group. Novice is for participants who have never competed in a costume contest, and Group is for two or more participants with a common theme or series competing together.

Gen Con draws a line by who made the outfit: costumes made by adults will be moved to its Professional category. Its other categories are themed: Fantasy / Historical, Game Characters and Pop Culture.

SurveyLegend's list of other categories, which it says depend on the event, names adult couples and singles next to groups, babies and toddlers, and children and teens.

Cosplay contest categories: Kawaii Kon's four tiers and BlizzCon's craft classes

Kawaii Kon requires every participant to select one category to compete in: Youth, Novice, Journeyman or Masters. Youth is for entrants aged 14 and below who have never won any costume-related award at any show. Novice is for those 15 or older with no such award. Journeyman is any age with one or two previous awards, and Masters is any age with three or more.

The ladder counts awards, not years of experience, so a first-time entrant and an experienced one who has never won start in the same tier. Kawaii Kon asks anyone unsure of a tier to contact the organisers for guidance.

BlizzCon 2026's Cosplay Contest sorts by craft instead of by award history: Master Crafter, Armories & Artifacts, Epic FX and Dynamic Duo.

Kawaii Kon's Youth line names an age and an award history but not who consents, so a parent or guardian reads the entry terms before a young entrant signs up.

Costume contest themes: Hollywood and Broadway, American icons, fandom worlds

Downtown Knoxville publishes two themed categories, Best Group (Themed) and Best Hollywood/Broadway (Themed), and pairs each with a gift card as its prize: a night at a bowling lanes for the group winner and a show at the Tennessee Theatre for the other.

Cheekwood's Halloween pooch party sets a special category, Founding Paw-thers, for dogs dressed as an American icon to mark America's 250th, and it keeps a Best Kid & Canine Combo category for pairs.

Comic-Con International's masquerade frames themes as sources: re-creations from movies, television, anime, comic books, Broadway shows and video games, with the rest completely original designs from the imagination. Gen Con names worlds instead: Fantasy / Historical (wizards, barbarians, pixies, mermaids, WWII soldiers, Renaissance maidens), Game Characters and Pop Culture.

Themes are published as categories, which makes the theme line a rule about what an entry must show.

Award categories: most creative, scariest, best homemade and best pet

Potato Creek State Park states who decides: judges will determine the most creative, scariest, funniest, best homemade, best group, most original and best pet awards. The City of Mobile names categories including Most Creative, Best Scariest, Best Overall, Most Hilarious, Best Owner & Pet, Best Makeup and Best Family/Group Costume, and adds that there is a chance for everyone to win.

Homemade carries an entry test of its own. Costume Works states that only homemade costumes belong in its homemade nomination, Get Your Holiday On lists best handmade, SurveyLegend lists coolest handmade costume, and Potato Creek lists best homemade.

Pets are their own award line in four places: best pet at Potato Creek, Best Owner & Pet at the City of Mobile, Best Kid & Canine Combo at Cheekwood, and pets among the Costume Works categories.

Costume contest ideas for work: adult, couple and group lines from published lists

Where a contest runs among co-workers, the entrants are adults who arrive alone, in pairs or as teams, and the published adult lists split them that way. Austin's adult event has Best Group, Get Your Holiday On lists best couple/group, The Bash lists couple costume and group costume, and SurveyLegend names adult couples and singles and groups.

Group size is defined differently from list to list. Costume Works sets its Best Group Costume at three or more in matching Halloween costumes, and Tucson Comic-Con sets Group at two or more with a common theme or series.

A team of two fits Tucson Comic-Con's Group line and is one short of Costume Works' three.

Fair play in a category list: tiers, age lines and what gets moved

Published categories carry fairness rules inside them. Kawaii Kon and Tucson Comic-Con keep first-time entrants in their own tiers: Novice at Kawaii Kon is for entrants aged 15 or older with no costume-related award, and Novice at Tucson Comic-Con is for participants who have never competed in a costume contest.

Gen Con moves costumes made by adults to its Professional category, Costume Works confines its homemade nomination to homemade costumes, and Kawaii Kon requires one chosen category per participant. Each is a rule about which entries compete against which.

Who judges is the other half of fairness. Potato Creek State Park says judges determine its awards, and the City of Mobile says there is a chance for everyone to win. No organiser quoted here describes a guest vote; a contest that uses one has to say so in its own rules.

Checks that come first: category match, entry cost and who judges

The rules quoted here work through category matching. A costume made by an adult is moved to Professional at Gen Con, only homemade costumes belong in Costume Works' homemade nomination, and Kawaii Kon asks anyone unsure of a tier to contact the organisers before choosing one.

An entry fee is the question a scam turns on. Category lists say what to wear, not what entering costs: the organiser's own page states whether entry costs anything, and a charge that appears only at the submission step is not from that page. A category line decides where an outfit competes, and it never decides who wins.

Step by step

  1. Read the category definition first

Each published category says what it accepts: Costume Works' Best Group Costume asks for three or more in matching Halloween costumes, Tucson Comic-Con's Group asks for two or more with a common theme or series, and Kawaii Kon's Youth asks for age 14 or below with no costume-related award.

  2. Match the outfit to one category

Kawaii Kon requires each participant to select one category from Youth, Novice, Journeyman or Masters. Gen Con moves costumes made by adults into Professional, so the maker matters as well as the outfit.

  3. Check who decides the awards

Potato Creek State Park says judges determine its awards. Where an organiser's page names no judges and no vote, its entry terms are the place to ask before any sewing starts.

Questions

What do you have to do to actually win a costume contest?

A costume wins inside its own category, and each category has a definition to meet. Costume Works' homemade nomination takes only homemade costumes, its Best Group Costume needs three or more in matching costumes, and Kawaii Kon's tiers depend on age and past awards. Judges decide from there: Potato Creek State Park says judges determine its awards.

Having a costume contest at a party? What are some funny, not basic costume contest categories?

Most lists carry a plain funny line, Funniest or Most Hilarious, and the organisers add narrower ones. The City of Mobile adds Best Makeup and Best Owner & Pet, Cheekwood adds Best Kid & Canine Combo, The Bash adds lookalike and Halloween mask, and Get Your Holiday On adds best celebrity impersonation.

I need one more category beside most original, best male and best female. Any ideas?

Best group and best handmade are the two categories that sit beside most original on published lists. Potato Creek State Park lists most original with best homemade, best group and best pet, and Get Your Holiday On lists it with best couple/group and best handmade.

Any tips or advice to help make an office costume contest fair and fun?

Sort entrants before judging, because published lists do it by tier, by age line and by maker. Kawaii Kon and Tucson Comic-Con give first-time entrants a Novice tier, Kawaii Kon's Youth tier stops at age 14, and Gen Con moves costumes made by adults into Professional. Group, couple and pet lines then give entrants who arrive in pairs or teams a place to compete.

Do you find it better to have a panel of judges, or guests vote?

The published lines rank neither method. Potato Creek State Park names judges: its listing says judges will determine the awards. No organiser quoted here describes guest voting, and a contest that uses guest voting states it in its own rules.

Any ideas on a good way to organize a Halloween costume contest?

Organisers start from a category list and give each category a definition. Potato Creek State Park names seven awards and says judges determine them, Austin's adult event runs five categories, Tucson Comic-Con splits its adult contest into Novice, Intermediate, Advanced and Group, and Costume Works defines Best Group Costume at three or more in matching costumes.

Can a group enter a costume contest together?

Yes. Costume Works has a Best Group Costume category for three or more in matching Halloween costumes, and Tucson Comic-Con's Group is for two or more with a common theme or series. Austin's adult event and Downtown Knoxville also run group categories.

What this page cannot do

No page can enter a costume in a contest or pick a winner, and this one does not try. Each organiser's published rules decide the categories, who judges and what entering costs, and an outfit that breaks them is moved or refused. Categories and dates belong to one edition, so the next edition needs its own reading.

Two rulebooks: the platform's and the organiser's

A contest vote sits under two rulebooks, the platform's and the organiser's. On CuteBaby, voters get ten free daily votes that expire at midnight, and an account needs a South African mobile number. Organisers then enforce their own terms: Darley may disqualify and replace a potential winner who does not follow its rules, and the Queen's Commonwealth Writing Competition disqualifies over-length entries automatically. An order for contest votes changes none of that.

Why a steady count reads as ordinary

Contest voting has a rhythm of its own. The Arizona State Fair includes live audience voting on every qualifying night, and the Ernie Ball contest measures online activity throughout its contest period. A count that builds across the window, from separate voters, matches that rhythm. None of this is a method for passing an organiser's checks, and an organiser can still disqualify an entry it doubts.

What the law covers, and what is turned down

In the United States, the FTC says a real sweepstakes is free and decided by chance, and that a skills contest can ask you to pay to play. Canada's Competition Bureau says a purchase requirement should be prominently disclosed. Those rules govern entry to a sweepstakes or promotion, and whether paying for votes in a contest is lawful where you live is a question for a lawyer. No order is taken for a sweepstakes or other chance draw, for a political ballot, or for a contest whose rules bar outside votes.

The refund rule and its limits

The part of an order that never reaches the contest's own count is refunded once the organiser's voting has closed. America's Favorite Pet calls its dates approximate and lets its operator extend deadlines, so that moment is the organiser's to set. A result, a disqualification and a voided vote are never refunded. At IODC, public votes and engagement do not by themselves decide the winners, and no refund changes how a contest weighs them.
