Music competition deadlines in 2026 and how each organiser takes entries
Music competition entries close on dated 2026 deadlines, from the Beethoven International Music Competition on October 1 to the Berlioz International Music Competition on December 10. Song contests such as IMSTA's and American Songwriter's take a song, Guitar Center's Open for Legends takes a video, and the international competitions take an application. Each organiser publishes its own rules, and the stages, the jury and the prizes are set there.

Eight dated entries and what each organiser asks for
Eight dated entries turn up in the pages checked, and two of them are applications rather than song entries. The Beethoven International Music Competition sets an application deadline of October 1, 2026, and the Berlioz International Music Competition lists December 10, 2026, as its Season 4 application deadline. The other six accept entries: songs, lyrics or a video, depending on the organiser.
Two of the eight run in numbered sessions (American Songwriter's Lyric Contest and Wide Open Country's Song Sessions). The Lyric Contest has Session One entries due November 15, 2026, and Song Sessions closes Session One on October 10, 2026. A date printed for Session One says nothing about a later session.
Berlioz numbers its cycles as seasons, and its December 10, 2026, deadline belongs to Season 4. The International Songwriting Competition is on an extended deadline, November 23, 2026, and an extension is announced by the organiser, so the notice on its own page is the record to copy. Guitar Center's October 21 is the one date among the eight printed without a year.
Ten weeks separate the first application deadline, Beethoven's, from the last, Berlioz's. And every other dated entry falls between the two.
- October 1, 2026: the Beethoven International Music Competition closes applications.
- October 10, 2026: Wide Open Country's Song Sessions closes entries for Session One.
- October 21: Guitar Center's Open for Legends takes a video of an original song, and the text checked prints no year.
- November 15, 2026: entries for Session One of American Songwriter's 2027 Lyric Contest are due.
- November 23, 2026: the International Songwriting Competition ends its extended deadline for 2026 entries.
- November 26, 2026: IMSTA's Online Song Competition reaches its submission deadline.
- December 7, 2026: the deadline for American Songwriter's Song Contest.
- December 10, 2026: the Berlioz International Music Competition closes Season 4 applications.
From first round to final: how the stages run
A published description of music competitions names three stages: preliminary, semi-final and final. Battle-of-the-bands competitions follow the same sequence in one guide's account: bands play a first round, finishers progress to a semi-final, and a final decides the overall winner. The field narrows at each step. An entrant to a battle of the bands is entering the first round of a sequence.
Slot length shapes a band's set. One guide to battle-of-the-bands competitions gives each band a fixed slot of between 15 and 30 minutes in which to play a short set.
A published guideline says the application materials shall include eligibility requirements, application procedures, the rules and procedures for the competition, the repertory for each stage and the prizes. A published guideline for international competitions says the jury shall be composed of musicians or music professionals recognised internationally for their expertise, competence, integrity and fairness.
The repertory of each stage sits in those papers, so an entrant to a staged international competition reads the pieces required for the preliminary, the semi-final and the final in the same document as the eligibility requirements and the prizes.
Composition competitions split two ways. Some take entries by nomination only, while others let composers submit one or more of their own works. Their rules run from the kind of work accepted and whether the music must be notated to duration, instrumentation and the composer's age or gender.
Judges, audience vote or both: what reaches the result
The format is the first line to read in the rules, because it settles whether a vote is part of the contest at all. In a battle of the bands the winner comes from judges, from a straight audience vote or from a hybrid; in an international competition it comes from a jury.
In a music competition scored by a jury, the score comes from the jurors the rules name, and an audience vote, a follower count or a campaign has no route into the scoresheet. In a straight audience vote or a hybrid, the organiser's own voting rules decide what counts, and a contest whose rules forbid paid votes removes entries that break them.
None of the eight dated entries describes a public vote in the pages checked. Their stated mechanics are deadlines, applications, uploads and submissions.
The entry route is where a scam shows. In a music contest, an application form or a payment page outside the organiser's own site is a warning sign, and so is a placing announced before a jury or a vote has decided anything. No contest rule quoted here offers a result for money.
Marching bands: eligibility, video and the starting line
Bands of America admits all bands made up of students up to and through the twelfth grade to its Regionals, Super Regionals and Grand National Championships. The rule draws its line at grade and names no age. Who consents to an entry for a student is a question for the organiser's terms, and a parent or guardian reads them before a form is filed.
Some marching acts enter by video, and the video rules quoted here are specific. Videos recorded before 2024 are not eligible, and the video must include audio from the live performance, not a pre-recorded or studio recording. Each rule binds only the contest that prints it.
On the day, one set of contest rules for pipe bands says bands shall march to the starting line, halt and await instructions from the Steward or the Ensemble Judge, and shall begin marching away from the line immediately upon the first beat of the introduction.
A rule for pipers in Grades III and above requires them to march during the March portion of any contest, unless physically disabled and unable to do so. One more rule restricts filming: contests are not to be filmed in their entirety, and footage is for highlight purposes only.
The air guitar contest and its freestyle round
In the air guitar contest run under US Air Guitar rules, the first round is freestyle: each competitor performs to a song of their own choosing. The text checked stops at Round 1. It names no later round, no judging criteria and no audience vote, so none of those is described here, and an air guitar contest entrant reads the full rulebook before choosing a song.
Air guitar sits apart in this hub because the Round 1 rule names a song and a style and no instrument. Everything else about the entry, from the number of rounds to the way winners are decided, is the organiser's to state.
Video, song and lyric entries at Guitar Center and American Songwriter
Guitar Center's Open for Legends takes one video. The performance is an original song, the performers are the entrant or a band, and a band is capped at five members. Entry closes October 21, and the text checked prints no year, so the year is confirmed on the page before a video is recorded.
American Songwriter runs two entries side by side. The Song Contest has a December 7, 2026, deadline, and the 2027 Lyric Contest, a separate entry for lyric writing, has Session One entries due November 15, 2026. An entrant to both is working to two dates a little over three weeks apart.
Checking a music competition website before entering
A music competition website is worth entering only when its rules page names the organiser, the jury or the vote, the deadline and the entry method. The dated entries print their formats in different ways: IMSTA's listing prints its format as Online, its deadline as November 26, 2026, and a Submit Your Song action; Guitar Center's page asks for an uploaded video; the two international competitions print application deadlines.
A music competition online takes the form of a song submission at IMSTA and an uploaded video at Guitar Center; each still names an organiser, a deadline and rules. Wide Open Country's Song Sessions prints its window as open now and closing October 10, 2026.
Two of the contest pages checked print an amount beside the deadline, and one of them charges per song. Those amounts are the organiser's to state and this page quotes none. Whether a contest applies an entry fee, or offers free entry, is a line to read on the organiser's page before any form is started.
What a poster or a certificate settles
No rule quoted on this page mentions a music competition poster, so a poster promotes an event and settles no entry question. The date, the deadline and the eligibility line come from the organiser's rules page, and a poster that differs from it loses to the rules page. Slogans and quotes on a poster are the designer's choice.
A music competition certificate sits outside the rules quoted here too. None of them says an organiser issues one or what it records, so a certificate is a question to put to that organiser before entering.
Place names with no dated listing behind them
A listing labelled "band competition bangor" names a town and no organiser, and none of the pages checked places an event in Bangor. The organiser's page has to name the town, the date and the venue before that listing counts as a dated entry.
The eight dated entries are deadlines, and none of them ties an entry to a city. The schedule names no venue in Indianapolis, Orlando or San Antonio. It names none in the UK, the USA or Korea either. A music competition canada listing needs its own dated organiser page before it earns a line here.
Band competition ratings are the organiser's to publish, and no page checked prints a rating scale. The only related text is the rule for pipers in Grades III and above, which names a competition level and no score.

Step by step
-
Find who runs it and what it takes
Start on the organiser's own page and note the name, the format and the date it prints. The eight entries here come from Beethoven, Berlioz, IMSTA, American Songwriter, Wide Open Country, Guitar Center and the International Songwriting Competition.
-
Sort the entry into its format
Decide whether the entry is an application, as at the two international competitions, a song or a lyric, as at IMSTA and American Songwriter, or a video, as at Guitar Center and Metallica Marching Band.
-
Read the stages and who decides
Look for the round structure and the decider: a jury of recognised musicians, a panel of industry judges, a straight audience vote or a hybrid. One guide to battle-of-the-bands competitions describes a first round, a semi-final and a final.
-
Check eligibility and video conditions
Read who is eligible, such as bands of students up to the twelfth grade at Bands of America, and what a video must be: recorded in 2024 or later, with audio from the live performance, under the video rules quoted here.
-
Note each date exactly as printed
Copy the deadline with its year, October 1, 2026, for Beethoven, for instance, and mark where a page prints none: Guitar Center's October 21 carries no year in the text checked.
Questions
What is a music competition?
A music competition is a contest in which musicians, bands or composers enter under an organiser's rules and the result comes from a jury, an audience vote or both. One published description says such competitions are held in preliminary, semi-final and final stages. The deadline, the format and the prizes are the organiser's to state.
How do music competitions work?
Music competitions work through the organiser's rules, which print a deadline, an entry format and a method of deciding the winner. Some stage a first round, a semi-final and a final; others close at a single deadline, as the song contests on this page do. The entrant follows the format printed on the organiser's own page.
Is a music competition the same as a battle of the bands?
A battle of the bands is one kind of music competition, with fixed slots, rounds and a winner chosen by judges, an audience vote or both. One guide gives each band a fixed slot of between 15 and 30 minutes and describes a first round, a semi-final and a final. Application-based and song-submission competitions follow other formats.
Who judges a music competition?
The organiser's rules name who decides: a panel of industry judges, a straight audience vote or a hybrid in a battle of the bands, and a jury in an international competition. A published guideline for international competitions says the jury shall be composed of musicians or music professionals recognised internationally for their expertise, competence, integrity and fairness.
Can a music competition be entered by video?
Some organisers take video entries, and each sets its own conditions. Metallica Marching Band videos go to YouTube, Guitar Center's Open for Legends takes a video of an original song, and video rules quoted on this page bar videos recorded before 2024 and require audio from the live performance.
Does an audience vote decide a music competition?
An audience vote decides a music competition only where the rules name one. One published explanation lists a straight audience vote beside a panel of judges and a hybrid as the three ways a battle of the bands is decided, and none of the eight dated entries on this page describes a public vote.

Nothing on this site places a band, a song or a video in any competition named here, and the site cannot alter a score or a jury's decision. The organiser sets the deadline, the format and who decides the winner, and a contest whose rules forbid paid votes disqualifies entries that use them. Dates change, and the organiser's own page overrides every date printed here.
A contest vote sits under two rulebooks, the platform's and the organiser's. On CuteBaby, voters get ten free daily votes that expire at midnight, and an account needs a South African mobile number. Organisers then enforce their own terms: Darley may disqualify and replace a potential winner who does not follow its rules, and the Queen's Commonwealth Writing Competition disqualifies over-length entries automatically. An order for contest votes changes none of that.
Contest voting has a rhythm of its own. The Arizona State Fair includes live audience voting on every qualifying night, and the Ernie Ball contest measures online activity throughout its contest period. A count that builds across the window, from separate voters, matches that rhythm. None of this is a method for passing an organiser's checks, and an organiser can still disqualify an entry it doubts.
In the United States, the FTC says a real sweepstakes is free and decided by chance, and that a skills contest can ask you to pay to play. Canada's Competition Bureau says a purchase requirement should be prominently disclosed. Those rules govern entry to a sweepstakes or promotion, and whether paying for votes in a contest is lawful where you live is a question for a lawyer. No order is taken for a sweepstakes or other chance draw, for a political ballot, or for a contest whose rules bar outside votes.
The part of an order that never reaches the contest's own count is refunded once the organiser's voting has closed. America's Favorite Pet calls its dates approximate and lets its operator extend deadlines, so that moment is the organiser's to set. A result, a disqualification and a voided vote are never refunded. At IODC, public votes and engagement do not by themselves decide the winners, and no refund changes how a contest weighs them.
